Intro
There is a global and unmet need for well-trained health professionals and other health workers. Yet, with globalisation there is an enormous opportunity for the health education field to benefit from international networks and knowledge exchange. The Medical Education focus area of CIHLMU was established to respond to the rising global need for well-coordinated, high-quality and relevant medical education and training.
The Medical Education focus area of CIHLMU seeks to support expanding medical education by advocating for international collaboration, education, training, and capacity building. In 2002, a partnership emerged between the medical faculty of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich and Jimma University in Ethiopia in an effort to strengthen medical education there. In 2009, this project became a part of the CIHLMU with a cornerstone being the development of the Master’s program (MSc) in Health Professional Education (MHPE) in Jimma, offered by Jimma University.
Beyond the Jimma partnership, the Medical Education area of CIHLMU supports international trainings. Academic Teacher Training Courses (ATTC), which have been organised in Africa, Europe, Asia and Latin America, focus on improving teaching, curriculum development and designing optimal evaluation methods.
Internal faculty development activities are also hosted at the Hospital at LMU. An additional project relates to International Medical Culture and encourages the development of intercultural competencies among (pre-dominantly) undergraduates. These diverse activities are centralised around one greater goal: enabling individuals and partner organizations, especially in least developed and low-income countries, to improve their own capacities to educate and train health professionals.
