12th Academic Teacher Training Course

Date
22 Feb 2021 26 Feb 2021

The Online Academic Teacher Training Course 2021 was held from 22. - 26. February 2021.

For the first time the Academic Teacher Training Course was conducted completely online via Zoom, covering 3 different time zones. A new adventure! It was a very intense week full of different activities pushing forward the academic teaching competence worldwide. Since participants couldn’t fly to Munich, Matthias Siebeck, one of our two course directors, „travelled“ every day through his video-background to different locations of the 36 participants and 12 facilitators: Bhutan, Ethiopia and Munich.

According to the big importance given to e-learning during the pandemic, this year‘s program focused on the special requirements and new opportunities of online teaching. The sessions focused on the question: How can we make virtual teaching interactive and varied in order to reach and motivate participants through the camera? Various interactive e-tools, like the Jigsaw method, were put in practice and integrated in new teaching concepts that were designed following the didactic principles of the ICAP framework and the SPICA model.

Lisa Hoffäller, our CIHLMU Program Coordinator of the MSc International Health took the perspective of participants and summerized the course as follows: „Being a participant in the ATTC this year seemed challenging at the beginning as it was conducted completely virtually for the first time. However, because of this, participants were able to gain even more insights into different teaching perspectives and meet more like-minded people from all around the globe. Laying the groundwork with an introduction to intercultural communication at the kick-off day was an enriching and important aspect in this endeavor of ours. Additionally, the international exchange of knowledge and learning especially in the small groups during the micro-teaching sessions was a highly appreciated and a valuable experience. It is exactly these international encounters that make the ATTC so special and thanks to all the organisers we could still learn from each other despite the current pandemic situation.“

Another participant said that it was facinating to see that though it was not possible to attend this course face to face, surprisingly the trust and the bond between participants grew strongly throughout the week, so that it was even possible to share challenges in the professional teaching practice for example during the peer group consultation.

Therefore, we are very happy that we achieved one of the most important course objective: to bring together academic teachers from the field of medical education and other science disciplines as well as with different cultural backgrounds and to build an international network of people with a strong interest in improving their skills as educators and in learning from one another.
