The International Network for Cooperation in Mental Health (i.nez), Center for International Health at Ludwig Maximilian University and Global Mental Health Group, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Ludwig Maximilian University, organized the 5th International Symposium on "Global Mental Health – Mental Health in Developing Countries".
More than half a billion people worldwide have a neuropsychiatric disorder or are dependent on alcohol or drugs. More than 80% of these people live in a developing country and most of them do not receive appropriate treatment. Many are stigmatized and experience prejudice, social exclusion and frequent violations of their human rights. All of these factors can cause serious psychological, physical, social and economic harm.
In the least developed countries, children and adolescents make up the largest part of the population. Mental health problems affect 10% to 20% of children and adolescents worldwide. Although mental health problems are a leading cause of health-related disability in this age group, the mental health needs of children and adolescents are grossly neglected. This year’s symposium will be dedicated to child and adolescent mental health. Reports from Africa, Asia and South America will illustrate various aspects of the problem.
