History

The CIHLMU Center for International Health, is an interdisciplinary and international network of excellence with the head office located at the hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich in Germany. We have partners in Latin America, Africa and Asia, as well as alumni in more than 25 countries worldwide.

In 2009, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) initiated a competition with the theme “university excellence in development cooperation”. Over forty German institutions of higher education took part in the competition, including the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, which was one of five winners. Each winner was awarded five million Euro in funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). A subsequent application for the follow-up period, 2015 to 2019, was successful, as well as the application for the transfer period from 2020 to 2022.

Since its foundation, CIHLMU has become an institution where numerous different faculties from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität have engaged in international cooperation and their numerous international partners have joined forces. CIHLMU offers an environment where joint activities can be planned, constructed, and conducted. The different member institutions provide a vast array of experience in international research and academic education. CIHLMU facilitates new international partnerships with and between current and future members, both by housing reliable potential partners worldwide and by offering support and know-how in international project management. Projects associated with CIHLMU may be bilateral between an international partner and an LMU institution, between two international partner institutions, or multilateral. Projects directly managed by CIHLMU always focus on academic education.
