Global Nutrition

Why do countless people still live in hunger and suffer from malnutrition, while at the same time more and more children and teenagers worldwide are facing health difficulties due to being overweight or obese? How can we ensure a healthy diet for everyone – despite climate change and difficult political conditions? What role do social and cultural aspects play in food consumption? And: what are we doing worldwide to combat malnutrition and what is being done at the community level?
This new course aims to answer these questions. It introduces current global nutrition problems that affect the health and livelihood of populations both in low- and high-income settings. In addition, the local and global dimensions of malnutrition (over- and undernutrition) are highlighted and discussed. It also examines different approaches implemented at the household, community, national and global level to improve nutritional status.

The main topics covered are:

• Overview of global nutrition. Overview of the global nutrition situation in the context of other critical issues of common concern: food supply, poverty, population growth, water, other environmental issues, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• Health and nutrition. Discussion of key nutritional issues of global importance, their effect on health and approaches to address them.
• Global and local strategies to address malnutrition. Insights into global and local strategies to address food and nutrition challenges in light of SDG2 “Zero Hunger” and SDG3 “Good health and Well-being”.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this module, course participants will be able to:

• Identify the biggest challenges around food production and consumption worldwide, considering the impact of Climate Change on our Food Systems,
• Appraise the interconnected nature of nutritional problems with focus on low-resource settings,
• Recognize the impact of nutrition on human health,
• Explain the Planetary Health diet and discuss its advantages and disadvantages in addressing malnutrition worldwide,
• Define and examine social, economic, cultural, and environmental influences on food access and dietary choices, and
• Explain and critically discuss global and local strategies to address malnutrition.

Course Schedule:

• April 14, 2023, 10 am - 4 pm CEST, Kick-off Meeting with introduction into the topic and the course
• April 17 - 28, 2023, 12 - 4 pm CEST, online course with lecturers, discussions, group activities and presentations

However, please note that the course program has been extended to two weeks and at the same time the course duration per day has been reduced. In addition, the course content may change based on last year's feedback and lecturer availability.

Registration for this year´s course is closed.

Cancellation policy: For cancellations made before the registration deadline, a non-refundable fee of 50 EUR will be charged. For cancellations made after the registration deadline until the course start, a non-refundable fee of 100 EUR will be charged. In case of no-shows or cancellations from the start of the course, the full course fee will be charged.

Scholarship Opportunities:

The Teaching and Training Unit (TTU) would like to offer students from low- and middle-income settings in Germany and worldwide the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to reduce or waive the respective tuition fees, provided that places in the Advanced Module are still available. Please note that a decision on such course fee reductions will only be made on an individual basis. Therefore, if you are interested, please send us your CV and a letter of motivation (no longer than 500 words) outlining your current situation and personal motivation for attending the Advanced Module.
